Nicole de Mestre

My art practice is rooted in a fascination with discarded materials and the stories they carry. I work entirely with found and recycled objects, drawn to the subtle narrative of weathered patinas, frayed edges and rusted surfaces shaped by time and use. These traces of previous lives guide my process far more than any preconceived idea.

Much of my making begins the moment I spot something on a kerbside pile or in my overflowing shed; with shape, colour and texture suggesting what it might become. I see potential in objects that appear exhausted or obsolete and I’m compelled to reimagine them in new forms. My baskets and sculptures continue the long tradition of using whatever is at hand, though in an urban and contemporary context.

The local environment is both a resource and inspiration. Transformation sits at the heart of my practice and I am motivated by the idea of creating beauty from what would otherwise end up in landfill, challenging the relentless wastefulness of our throwaway culture. While my art cannot solve global environmental problems, I hope it encourages others to pause, notice and reconsider what they discard.
