Timeless Textiles Gallery in partnership with The Lock Up presents STITCHED UP , an exhibition which profiles 25 contemporary textile artists from all over the world and Australia,
Artists from within the untethered fibre artists, have responded to the stories of individual girls who attended the Newcastle Industrial School between 1867 & 1871. Each artist has translated narrative and historical elements of a particular girl into an artwork, a pantalet/drawers, patterned from that period making a total of 12 incorporated into the installation. Working with fibres, imagery, stitch, cloth and colours that evoke a sense of the lives lived and the girls who each did the best they could in difficult circumstances and within the context of that time.
The initial exhibition coincided with the opening of The Industrial School 150 years ago. The Lock up is part of the Newcastle Historical Reserve Trust (NHRT).
This project is a collaborative fibre art exhibition ‘interpreting’ the lives of 193 girls who were at The Newcastle Industrial School. Little has been known of the history of these girls. Biographies of these girls have been researched and published by local historian, Jane Ison http://nis.wikidot.com. These girls made their own clothing, clothing for the boys on the Vernon (Cockatoo Island) as well as mended and repaired for residents living in close vicinity to the school.
