untethered fibre artists

untethered fibre artists inc. produce and exhibit art using fibre, textile materials and processes.

The group provides a forum for members’ expression and development of fibre art practices.

The projected concept of a fibre exhibition sets its self apart from the traditional – with the unconventional intermixing and intermingling of ideas, through the  connectivity of a theme; utilising, yet unifying, in the different fibre mediums – encompassing  the use of stitch, fibre, fabric, print, found objects and surface design, in a visually dynamic exhibition.

The artworks entice the audience to share in the responses which reflect on individual experience and interpretation of the exhibition title.

Think we might be for you?

We’re excited to open up an opportunity for a couple of fabulous, unique and extremely dedicated fibre artists to join untethered fibre artists, as we want to expand just a fraction…

We won’t lie, it’s tough!

Don’t read any further if you aren’t prepared to enter a professional fibre arena. Preparing to exhibit in high profile galleries not only requires the making of spectacular and unique artwork but also the tedium of the admin, paperwork and adhering to schedules. As we are a small group, exhibiting regularly, we’ve had to limit membership to NSW and ACT, so everyone can share the workload. So be prepared to travel to meetings, exhibition openings, help with set up, freight etc.

I haven’t scared you yet?

Be prepared to engage about your work.

From the onset of the formation of this group, nearly 10 years ago, we haven’t lost focus on our objectives – exhibiting fibre in high profile galleries. As the group evolved, we deliberately decided to structure the group so that artists feel they belong to a collective, working on a single theme, engaging in shared dialogue and operate by mutually supporting each other, allowing the growth of the individual for the mutual benefit of the group.

The group’s focus is to exhibit, not create production works to sell.

Have you the skills and artistic ability?

The focus is on the importance of excellence in artwork for exhibitions in larger galleries. Understandably, because we’re a small group, we’re mindful that the group needs to keep a diversity in the technical skills of our members, and new members are selected and equated to this level. That formal selection process can seem a bit scary but don’t be put off!

Still curious?

We value the building of strong relationships, supporting each other’s practice, being prepared to negotiate the individual spaces for members to work without impinging on the work of another – with the real expectation that every member will be developing their practice, always challenging themselves. Cooperation and mutual support of each other’s art practice is integral to the group’s holistic approach.
