Artist Statement

Canberra based, I am an artist who encompasses two threads of enquiry, textiles and found object. A drawing practice and extensive journal records, research and reading supports my textile works.  Textiles are my preferred medium, but are supplemented with mixed media. I have studied and practiced traditional craft techniques and incorporated this to create contemporary works.

My most recent work was based on observational drawing of birds, found feathers and forest debris. My hand embroideries, watercolors and multimedia works demonstrate the birds’ similarity to us in daily life. This series consists of 52 small works, one done every week during 2017. Some are a character assassination, while others show the strength and lightness, the ugly and madness of birds I have met.

The theme continues with feathers, flowers, plants and discarded detritus, explored in a variety of styles and experimental media to create an engaging and eclectic exhibition to inspire and connect viewers to the local flora and environment in new ways. I am currently exploring the unpredictable effects of rain on my observational drawings.

There is not a day that I am not busy with my hands, stitching, exploring experimental embroidery and recording the process in journals for future ideas.

I work from my home studio, exhibiting locally, interstate and the USA. When travelling I am constantly recording ideas for future reference.
